Synopsis

Amid the economic chaos of early postwar Japan, a counterfeiting operation is launched in a poor mountain village. Led by an ex-army officer and the head teacher at the elementary school, the entire village mobilizes behind the scheme. Local papermaking craft, combined with counterfeiting techniques learned during the war in China, lead to initial success, until a betrayal lands the ring in the clutches of the law. Based on a true story, the film is directed with a satiric touch by one of Japan's leading comedians. Brimming with human drama and suspense, Counterfeit delivers a light-hearted jab at the money worship that prevails in today's world.

About the Director

A comedian, scriptwriter, chef, and actor, the multi-talented Yuichi chose the story of people intoxicated by money for his first film. With a veteran's knack for storytelling, Kimura depicts a complex web of human relationships, from family love to cold-blooded betrayal, as the villagers pin ever greater hopes on the counterfeiting scheme. In his hands, the serious theme of the film is transformed into high entertainment, spiced with laughter, tears, and suspense.
