Assembling Colors from Nature
Wood mosaics are made by combining various pieces of colored wood, taking advantage of the natural timber color and grains of each. Wood mosaic artistic traditions that started in Japan's Edo era (mid 19th century) in the Hakone area (Odawara), one of the country's richest forest area, are still used today. TSUYUKI uses two wood mosaic techniques: one uses sliced wood mosaics to decorate boxes, etc; the other is carving out objects from a wood mosaic bloc using woodturning techniques. The firm produces elaborate, beautiful patterns using roughly 15 kinds of timber.
Since its foundation in 1926, TSUYUKI WOOD WORKING PLANT has been engaged exclusively in the manufacture and sale of wood mosaic products. The firm's founder, born in the Hatajyuku era of Hakone, began serving his apprenticeship under a grandson of the initiator of Edo wood mosaics. Under the motto "lifestyle creation", Tsuyuki endeavors to develop wood mosaics to match the times, while honoring traditional techniques.
