Reviving Handcraft Skills Through Design
Tokushima is one of Japan's leading dressing table production areas. Due to a decline in the dressing table culture, however, Tokushima's carpentry industry, known for its high level craft making techniques, faces a difficult situation. In a bid to revive the production area through the introduction of innovative design, Nosigner, a product designer, was invited as an advisor. The first product developed through this collaboration was Awa Yusan Bako, or tiered picnic box, entitled "Sumi" Yusan bako are traditional tiered food boxes, once popular in Tokushima and representing a culture long since forgotten. To shed fresh light on such forgotten culture and create new value through a combination of modern design and age-old craftsmanship, Tokushima's challenge, to bridge the past and present is just beginning.
Founded in 182, TSUBOI WOOD CRAFT produces furniture pieces using the handcraft skills and sophisticated processing technologies for raw wood, which are built upon the tradition of Tokushima's carpentry industry. Specializing in custom-made modern style and traditional furniture, the firm creates long-lasting products utilizing its strong capacity in product development and design that fits modern lifestyles.
