TSURUYA Co., Ltd. established in 1907, manufactures rattan products, importing material from the South Seas and using traditional Japanese techniques. The firm's latest line of rattan furniture, "ami", was developed taking advantage of Yamagata prefecture's support systems, which aim to support the development of marketable products through utilizing modern design. The line is the product of joint collaboration of Setsuko Yamada, director of the Tokyo Lifestyles Institute, Inc., and Hiroshi Yoneya, a designer. Mr. Yoneya had the idea of using stainless steel, thinking it would add an element of "lightness" to the rattan. Ms. Yamada set out to create rattan furniture that "exists like air." The line was developed over the course of about a year.
It is hoped that "ami" line, in which the attractiveness of rattan is expressed directly and honestly, and the firm’s other products, will be loved by users for a long time. The company hopes to continue attracting people to the beauty and simplicity of rattan.
