IMTS 2012, The International Manufacturing Technology Show, will be held in Chicago at McCormick Place from September 10th through 15th. IMTS is sponsored by AMT, The Association for Manufacturing Technology, and occurs every two years. It is the largest manufacturing trade show in North and South America, with over 1,800 companies exhibiting on 1.2 million square feet of space. IMTS 2010 had over 82,000 attendees from nearly 120 countries.
For the first time, JETRO has organized a Japan Pavilion for IMTS 2012, and will welcome seven Japanese exhibiting companies. Company representatives will be present at the Pavilion to introduce their products and services, and to meet with potential business partners. Each exhibiting company will also have an English-Japanese translator present to facilitate communication and meetings. These exhibitors are eager to network with the American manufacturing community, and are especially interested in potential buyers for supplier relationships.>> more Japan's New Initiative for Sustainable Growth: Issues and Opportunities for U.S. Firms Date: Friday, September 14th, 2012

Advanced Registration Required! The Japanese government has, over the last few years, introduced a number of new initiatives to attract foreign companies to Japan. A new feed-in-tarriff and location-based subsidies are just two examples of the positive measures that have been implemented in the past year alone, specifically to encourage the growth of renewable energy and the continued recovery of areas affected by the events in Fukushima in March of 2011. This seminar aims to inform U.S. companies and organizations of the ongoing efforts and opportunities in Japan's $5.8 trillion economy. >> more The Patent Game: Changing Values in Changing Times Date: Thursday, September 20th, 2012

USPTO (The United States Patent and Trademark Office) is opening a satellite office in Silicon Valley. The United States patent system is changing from a first-to-invent to a first-to-file system, effective March 16, 2013. We are at the dawn of a historical change. How does this affect innovations? What lessons can Silicon Valley businesses learn from the Japanese, who have had the experience of dealing with a first-to-file system for many years? Will the dependence of US and Japan on intellectual properties as a protection of their innovations bring their IP strategies closer? Please join us for an interactive evening program with representative panelists from the hi-tech industry, academia, the venture capitalist community, and a large international corporation, as they present a variety of approaches in dealing with the changing landscape of IP and patent law in their respective industries. Case studies will be presented.>> more

Time: 12:00pm - 5:00pm
Location: Nashville Airport Marriott, Nashville, TN Organized by: JETRO
Advanced Registration Required! In Japanese, the words mono (thing) and zukuri (process of making) when taken together literally mean the process of making or creating things, however a mere translation does not convey the accurate connotation of monozukuri. The concept is much more intense; monozukuri means having the spirit to produce excellent products and the ability to constantly improve a production system and process.
Monozukuri therefore may be a somewhat new and exotic word that American managers hear coming from their Japanese partners. However, American suppliers hoping to develop a closer collaboration with Japanese companies will have to fully embrace the concept and practice of monozukuri at their respective companies. >> more
