The Fifth Annual CSIS-JETRO Conference on East Asian Economic Integration and U.S.-Japan Relations
Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 9:00AM - 1:30PM
ENGLISH
JETRO Event
As economic integration advances in East Asia, individual countries are moving to strengthen their separate economic alliances. FTA negotiations are underway not just among Japan, China, and Korea, with ASEAN as a pivot, but they are expanding to include India, Australia and New Zealand. In the meantime, the United States has already concluded an FTA with Singapore, and signed an agreement with Korea.
Simultaneously, following the ASEAN+3 and ASEAN+6 agreements, researchers in East Asia are conducting two joint studies on East Asian economic integration. On the other hand, the United States has announced its interest in joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), in an effort toward the creation of an APEC-wide FTA (FTAAP). These developments are bound to directly affect U.S.-Japan relations, making it necessary for both countries to consider what these relations should be like.
