Currently, investments in environment and energy-related industries are vigorous all around the world. Particular attention has been focused on fields pertinent to lithium-ion and other type batteries, and to new-energy sources, including photovoltaic power generation.

As for the lithium-ion battery which Japan put to practical use first, it is well known worldwide that the Japanese companies have advanced technologies for production, and occupy around 50% of global production share. According to the report of Development Bank of Japan Inc., of Japanese production, approximately 80% is produced in the Osaka/Kansai region. Moreover, roughly 70% of Japan's solar battery production is occurring in the Osaka/Kansai region in 2009.

In recent years, environment and energy related companies have become concentrated in the Osaka/Kansai region, especially around Osaka Bay. The Osaka/Kansai region is now transforming into the world factory of solar batteries. Meanwhile, the City of Osaka is promoting the establishment of new-energy clusters to maximize the region's potential.
