Glycoscience for Innovative Medicines: A Case Study in Japan

Conference: Breakout Sessions, Track: Bench to Products

Promising new microarrays derived from the convergence of biotechnology and other advanced technologies, including nanotechnology, optronics, electronics and ICT, drive more exhaustive clinical proteomics with higher accuracy and sensitivity. Particularly, emerging technologies for glycan profiling, derived from glycoscience and glycomics, provide unique and powerful tools for the development of cancer diagnosis and therapy, regenerative medicine and stem cell-based therapy. This session will outline the current frameworks and initiatives for the development and applications of microarrays and clinical proteomics that can facilitate innovative medicine development and drug discovery, driven by the Japan sector.

Program
Keynote Speech I
“Glycomics, coming of age”
Jun Hirabayashi, PhD - Chair
Deputy Director, Research Center for Medical Glycoscience
National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science & Technology Glycomics is an emerging field of life science, essential for not only elucidation of complex life systems but also future propagation of bio-industry. For the latter purpose, GLIT, i.e., Glyco-innovation and Industrial Technology, has been established in Japan last January.

Keynote Speech II
“Defining human stem cells by Glycomics”
Akihiro Umezawa, MD
Director, Department of Reproductive Biology and Pathology
National Research Institute for Child Health and Development, Japan Glycomics is a powerful tool for in vitro cell-based assay system in drug development / drug safety assays for pharmaceutical industry.

Case Study I
“A Novel Glycan Profiling Technology using Lectin Microarrays”
Masao Yamada, PhD
Director, Glycomics Research Laboratory
Moritex Corporation
Moritex will present a novel glycan profiling technology using lectin microarrays which was jointly developed with AIST. It is the only single technology which is able to analyze very weak glycan/lectin interations in a liquid phase without any washing. The major application areas of this technology will be (1) glyco-biomarker screening, (2) characterization of cell surface glycome, (3) quick and easy monitoring of therapeutic glycoproteins, and (4) diagnosis of health conditions.

Case Study II
“BlotGlyco beads --breakthrough to high throughput glycomics analysis—"
Akiko Okubo
Assistant Manager, Marketing, S-BIO Development Department
SUMITOMO BAKELITE Co., Ltd.
Without tedious column chromatography, BlotGlyco beads can purify glycan completely, and also label them for MS and HPLC. High throughput glycosylation analysis of antibody drugs, large scale clinical biomarker discoveries are realized with the BlotGlyco.
