SPEAKER BIOS

Jun Nagamine

Jun Nagamine, Managing Director, CPA, Tax accountant, Nagamine & Mishima
Jun Nagamine has been a registered CPA and tax accountant in Japan for more than 20 years. In 1989, he established the Nagamine Accounting Office and in 2008 formed Nagamine & Mishima. Nagamine & Mishima has supported over 250 overseas companies on tax issues in Japan. In addition, the firm provides tax and audit consulting services to companies using the JETRO Invest Japan Business Support Center (IBSC), a 'one-stop shop' of resources for establishing a company in Japan. Also, for more than 10 years he has lectured on corporate income taxation at the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) and on finance at the Hitachi Institute of Management Development. He has also written several publications on taxes. Mr. Nagamine earned his B.A. in Literature at the University of Tokyo and his MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Erich Friess

Erich Friess, Senior VP and Global Business Manager, Commercial Banking Division, Union Bank
Erich Friess is Senior Vice President and Global Business Manager at Union Bank. Prior to this position, Mr. Friess held several executive and management positions over 10 years at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd., with two posts in Tokyo, Japan. Prior to this, he served as Vice President at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi in Chicago for four years. Mr. Friess earned his B.A. in History and Economics at McGill University and his MBA in Finance at the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Makoto Abe

Makoto Abe, Japan Business Advisor, JETRO San Francisco
Makoto Abe serves as the Japan Business Advisor for the San Francisco office of JETRO. He heads Japan Business Solutions in San Jose, California, where he helps U.S. and Japanese companies conduct business with each other through technological alliances and other forms of partnerships. He earned his bachelor's degree from Kwansei Gakuin University, a master's degree from the University of Maryland in Baltimore, and an MBA in international business from Tulane University in New Orleans.

Matt Stephens

Matt Stephens, Deputy Director of Business Development, JETRO San Francisco
Matt Stephens has over 9 years of experience assisting US companies to expand their businesses in Japan. At JETRO, he oversees business partnering programs between US and Japanese companies, and guides US companies through the process of establishing their Japan offices. To date, he has been the project leader on establishing the Japan offices of 17 US companies covering a range of products and services in IT, biotech, retail, and other areas. He obtained his MA in Commercial Diplomacy from the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
