JETRO Event

JETRO Chicago, Paro Robots U.S., and the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago are pleased to present an afternoon seminar - Innovation with the Therapeutic Robot, Paro - featuring Paro's inventor Dr. Takanori Shibata, Senior Research Scientist, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) of Japan.
Paro is a therapeutic robot used in elderly institutions, hospitals, and for treatment of patients with Alzheimer's, dementia, and autism. Modeled after a baby harp seal, Paro has the same types of positive physiological and psychological effects as animal therapy, and helps to increase social interaction between the patient and caregiver.
Dr. Shibata will outline the development of Paro over the past two decades, how Paro is being used in health care facilities in Japan and around the world, and the benefits of patients interacting with Paro. Dr. Shibata will also discuss how Paro is being currently used to soothe victims in evacuation shelters in Tohoku affected by the March 11th earthquake in Japan.
Reception with light refreshments to follow presentation. You will be able to meet and interact with Paro at the reception. RSVP by May 20th to secure your complimentary general admission tickets (up to 4 tickets) to the Museum and to this presentation.
Paid underground parking is available at the Museum. The registration table located in the Museum's Entry Hall will open at 10 a.m.
