4th Tuesday Tech Exchange - An Innovative Way to Harvest Daylight for Passive Lighting
Tuesday, June 24, 2008, 6:30PM - 8:00PM
ENGLISH
JETRO Event
Presented by
Nobuo Oyama
President
United Solar Guide, Inc.
Background:
It is urgent for humanity to take steps to prevent global warming by decreasing our carbon footprint. Japan has become known as one of the world's most eco-conscious countries and this year it will host the G8 Summit in Hokkaido, where global environmental issues are expected to be among the major topics taken up. Japan has developed many energy-saving technologies in the quest for sustainable development and the utilization of sunlight in place of artificial lighting is on the forefront of energy conservation.
Nobuo Oyama, the President of Japanese startup company United Solar Guide, Inc. will give a presentation on this field at JETRO during a visit to the US. United Solar Guide has developed an innovative product, the Solar Guide, that can passively fill existing rooms with diffuse light through daylight harvesting without the need for remodeling. Their window "blinds" use a holographic material to guides daylight into the room, providing lighting without the use of electricity. Daylighting, the use of daylight as a primary source of illumination indoors, has been demonstrated to save on both electricity and air conditioning, as well as increase the quality of the visual environment, reduce operating costs and improve user satisfaction. Daylighting plays a strong role in programs such as LEED (The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which now has expanded recognition in L.A. City's Green Building Ordinance and California's Title 24 energy code. The technology also has applications in areas such as agriculture. Please join us to hear Oyama talk about this and other intriguing new technologies in areas his company is involved, such as LED lighting, greenhouses that block infrared light while allowing in 98% of visible light, and photo-biological hydrogen production.
