4th Tuesday Technology Exchange Seminar - Water Supply System of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California

Mr. Timothy Blair will present an overview of the water supply system of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan). Metropolitan as a wholesaler, along with Metropolitan?s member agencies and retail agencies, provide water to over 18 million Californians - roughly half the State's population or 1 in 20 United States residents. Mr. Blair will share Metropolitan's vision for future water supply reliability through water conservation, water recycling, and improved infrastructure in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Mr. Blair's overview will cover the sources of southern California's water supplies, some comparative costs and benefits of these supplies, and potential needs for new technologies and services to advance Metropolitan's vision.
About the Speakers
Mr. Timothy Blair - Metropolitan Water District of Southern California
Tim Blair has worked in southern California's water industry for over 22 years. As Manager for Water Use Efficiency at the Metropolitan Water District, Tim develops policies and strategies to advance water conservation, water recycling, groundwater recovery, and seawater desalination. In his prior roles with Metropolitan, Tim has managed Integrated Water Resources Planning, distribution system reliability planning, water storage and transfer program negotiations, and drought contingency planning. Prior to joining Metropolitan, Tim was a staff economist for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power working on conservation-based water rates and drought response planning. Tim is an elected member of the Board of Director for the California Urban Water Conservation Council, has served as a member of the Governor's Landscape Efficiency Taskforce, and is currently a member of the Urban Stakeholder Committee advising DWR on the implementation of legislation targeting a 20% reduction in per capita water use by the year 2020. Tim is a graduate of the University of California at San Diego where he received a degree in Quantitative Economics and Decision Sciences.
Mr. Linden Nishinaga - City of Torrance Water Commissioner
Linden Nishinaga is a California licensed Professional Civil Engineer, a USGBC LEED Accredited Professional, and a duly appointed water commissioner with the City of Torrance. Mr. Nishinaga has long worked in the CA public sector as a civil and structural engineer, program & project manager, and senior engineering supervisor at three major Southern California public sector agencies. Mr. Nishinaga is also active in two national green building and civil engineering sustainability committees as well as being a Cal EMA post-earthquake civil engineer inspector under its Safety Assessment Program. Moreover he is a member of the CA High Speed Rail Authority's Business Advisory Council. Ever since his past stint at the Port of Los Angeles, Mr. Nishinaga has duly worked with JETRO on technology exchange and trade enhancement issues between the U.S. and Japan.
