
April 2009 – In FY 2008, ending March 2009, a total of 123 overseas firms utilized JETRO’s support and services to either set up a business in Japan or expand their business within Japan,
approximately the same number as the 125 firms recorded in FY 2007, ending March 2008.
By region, the majority of these new firms came from Europe (44 firms: France 14, Germany 11, U.K. 4, Netherlands
4, Italy 3, and others), Asia (41 firms: China 15, Korea 9, Hong Kong 4, India 4, Singapore 4, Taiwan 2, and others)
and North America (31 firms: U.S. 28, Canada 3). Also, four firms came from Oceania, two from Central and South
America, and one from the Middle East.
Notably, JETRO supported Petróleo Brasileiro S/A (Petrobras), Brazil's dominant figure in oil exploration and
production, in establishing a business in Okinawa prefecture. JETRO also supported the Swedish home furnishings
company IKEA in expanding business into local areas.

JETRO operates six Invest Japan Business Support Centers (IBSCs) across Japan to provide one-stop support and
service to overseas firms seeking to establish their business in Japan. The centers--linked to relevant government
ministries, agencies and regional governments--provide free temporary office space (for up to 50 business days),
consultations with expert advisors about how to set up a business in Japan, and access to a wealth of business
information. Six hundred and sixty-nine (669) firms have made use of the IBSC to set up their business in Japan since
the first IBSC opened in Tokyo in 2003.
