Based on the Kyoto Society of Inter-Art Exchange/ Japan Art Forum’s (JARFO) successful national exhibition series of traditional Japanese ceramic, Shuki-Ten New York will offer several unique opportunities for New Yorkers to learn about traditional Japanese ceramics and customs. The main event of Shuki-Ten New York is a sake vessel (“shuki”) ceramics exhibition (“ten”) that will be on view from March 6th thru 20th 2007 at the main gallery of the venerable Nippon Club on 57th Street in New York City. The show will feature original works from Japanese (50) and American (7) ceramics artists of various generations and styles who will each produce a single set of tokkuri (sake bottle) and sakazuki (sake cup) to debut at the show. The show will include original works from three Japanese masters who have been designated Living National Treasures (“LNT”) by the Japanese Ministry of Culture. These artists are: Mr. Chin Jyukan, Mr. Nakazato Takashi, and Mr. Shimaoka Tatsuzo. The exhibition will include multimedia presentations (video, projection, etc) of studio practices of the artists. Also of note, and in the spirit of the deep traditions and cross-cultural principles of the event, several participating artists --- including Japanese LNT Shimaoka Tasuzo and American Warren Mackenzie --- were onetime students of the Japanese artist Hamada Shoji (1894-1978), who is widely considered to be the most important Japanese craft and ceramic artists of the 20th century.
