Singers to Watch

Another Amerie in Japan?

Anybody who is interested in mainstream R&B would probably recognize the name, Amerie. She is a sexy package who understands how to flow with the beat. However, not many are familiar with the fact that she is actually a mixture of African-American and Korean. Maybe this is why she has the blood of musical talent along with the exotic touch. So if you agree that this Asian/ African/ American mix can bring out not only that talent but also the look, there is another new talent we would like to introduce.

Crystal Kay Williams is a popular R&B singer in Japan. Similar to Amerie, she is a mixture of Korean and African-American, and both of these artists are signed to Sony Music. Crystal was born in Yokohama, Japan in 1986 to an African-American father who is a bassist from New York and a Korean-born mother who is also a singer. Growing up with professional musicians as parents, she was able to further excel her talent. Having attended an American school in Japan, she is fluent in both English and Japanese and has also studied French.

Crystal became known to the public after the well-promoted collaboration with m-flo in 2003, a popular band in Japan with a lead vocalist who is half Cambodian and Japanese. She scored her first top 10 hit with "Motherland", which was used as the ending theme for the anime "Fullmetal Alchemist" in 2004. Her greatest hit single to date is 2005's "koi ni ochitara", which became the theme song for a Japanese drama and peaked at second place on the weekly charts.
