Symposium Will Explore Market and Partnership Opportunities in Japan for U.S. Technology Companies
(SAN FRANCISCO, FEBRUARY 22 2005)– With the explosive growth of the digital consumer electronics market, technology innovators are radically changing business models in anticipation that next-generation products, such as home networking and information appliances, will drive the next wave of economic growth. Highlighting recent examples of successful U.S. and Japanese collaboration, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) will host The East West Advantage; Strategies for Growth in the Digital Consumer Electronics Age on March 3, 2005 at the Tech Museum in San Jose. The symposium will explore both the potential market and partnership opportunities in Japan for Bay Area technology companies.
“There has never been a better time for collaboration between U.S. and Japanese companies,” said Naoyuki Haraoka, chief executive director of JETRO's San Francisco office. “JETRO has helped numerous U.S. companies successfully enter the Japanese market, and we look forward to working with Silicon Valley companies to maximize the tremendous partnership and growth opportunities in the digital consumer electronics space.”
Japan’s expertise in electronic components and design has led to increased collaboration over the past several years between U.S. and Japanese companies in the area of joint research and development. Establishing a local R&D center in Japan to facilitate improved, real-time collaboration on design in the early stages of product development is becoming a crucial factor for success in the global digital consumer electronics marketplace. Recent examples of U.S.-Japan collaboration include the PlayStation 3 and new Cell microprocessor.
At the symposium, speakers from some of the industry’s most highly-respected companies will provide insight into succeeding in this new era. Speakers include - Daryl Hatano, Vice President of Public Policy, Semiconductor Industry Association; - Dr. Masao Fukuma, Vice President of Laboratories, NEC Corporation; - Dr. Taner Ozcelik, General Manager, Consumer Electronics, nVIDIA Corporation; - Dr. Haruyoshi Yagi, Senior Vice President, LSI Group, Fujitsu Ltd.; - Dr. Hisashi Yamada, Chief fellow of Technology, Toshiba Corporation; and - Dr. David Tuckerman, Senior Vice President & Chief Technical Officer, Tessera Inc.
In addition to hosting symposia, JETRO also offers market intelligence and business development assistance for U.S. companies seeking to successfully enter the Japanese market, including in-depth information on market and regulatory conditions in Japan, logistics assistance while in Japan and free local office space through JETRO’s Invest Japan Business Support Centers. In addition, JETRO also hosts partnering events at some of the largest industry trade shows in the United States, including CES, BIO, and CEATEC (in Tokyo).
“JETRO is here to serve as a one-stop resource for effectively navigating the business, governmental and social waters of the Japanese market,” said Haraoka. “Having an experienced, dependable and strategic partner will become even more critical for Silicon Valley companies as they seek out collaborative opportunities in Japan within the digital consumer electronics arena.”
The conference will take place at March 3 from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the San Jose Tech Museum’s IMAX Theater.
